Malay Unity

When the Malays refuse to unite

By ZULKIFLEE BAKAR
pengarang@utusan.com.my

What else can the Malays say when MCA is becoming more vocal in making demand to
gain back their ground and political mileage from the Chinese?
What else can the Malays do when the DAP is getting bolder by the day as the
champion of the Chinese interest?
What else can the Malays do in confronting this political antic? Is it
sufficient just to
express regret and give warning that the Malay rights should not be touched?
What about the revelation made by Perak Mufti, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria that
there are quarters who had formulated a new constitution in an attempt to erode
the Malays and Muslims interest.
This writer believes that the vociferous attempts by this group will not end
just there especially in the light of 13rd general elections.
But what can a Malay do? It must be admitted that they can do nothing because
they are in disarray.
When MCA openly said that it will not look over its shoulder in fighting for its
cause along the opposition line, the parties representing the Malays continue to
be in the state of rivalry.
This is obvious when Pas, a 100 percent Malay and Muslim-based party openly
refused to be in sync with UMNO.
It is a big sin to support UMNO even if it is necessary for the unity of the
Malays and Muslims. And yet Pas find it proper to sleep in one bed with the
party
it vehemently condemned as infidel and opposed the very principle that it
advocate.
This disunity is giving an added advantage to MCA and DAP and in fact give the
new spirit to them in pushing their agenda to erode the Malay rights because
they understand that the Malays in Pas will not support UMNO on these issues.
While UMNO members put their lives in fighting to defend the Malay rights, the
other Malays in Pas and PKR, can only remain silent.
What is more upset, Pas and PKR will say that UMNO is racist in highlighting
issues on the Malay rights. But when MCA and DAP brought up racial issues, they
it is right to do so in the name of justice.
As such, in this aspect, the Malays must wake up and for as long as they fail to
sing the same tune in defending their rights, the Malays will have nothing left
in future.
The only way to stop the challenge towards the Malay rights is for all the
Malays to unite. This is for real and not an attempt at provoking the Malays to
come together which is seen as almost impossible. The only weapon left for the
survival of the Malays is unity. They had learnt the hard way in the last
general elections. As such they should understand the repercussion should they
remain disarray in future.

    Mosque row and US vote

    Friday, August 20, 2010
ADD another US election-year hurdle for Democrats: President Barack Obama's forceful defence of the right of Muslims to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York.

His comments are giving Republicans a campaign-year cudgel and forcing Democrats to address a divisive issue within weeks of November contests that will decide the balance of power in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in a competitive re-election fight, was the highest profile Democrat to move away from Obama on the matter.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," Reid's spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement Monday, referring to a provision of the US Constitution. "Senator Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else."

Democrats privately called the issue a distraction when the party should be laser-focused on keeping comfortable majorities in Congress. The political climate already favours Republicans as economically struggling voters look to unleash their fury on the party in power.

White House aides have spent four days trying to explain exactly where the normally eloquent president stands on the mosque. Obama's ringing statement in support of religious equality Friday, followed a day later by a caveat, stoked anew false Internet rumours about his citizenship and religion.

Some Democratic candidates fear the political fallout that Republicans suggest is coming against those who support building a mosque two blocks from the lower Manhattan site of the September 11, 2001, attacks. And some Republicans are trying to walk a careful line in their criticism, lest they be tagged religiously intolerant or be accused of stoking fear.

Former Senator Dan Coats, who is challenging Rep Brad Ellsworth for an Indiana Senate seat, said: "It's an insult I think to the people who lost lives there."

One of the few to praise the president was Republican-turned-independent Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York.

"If we shut down - shout down - a mosque and community center because it is two blocks away from the site where freedom was attacked, I think it would be a sad day for America," Bloomberg told reporters Monday.

For weeks, the White House had refused to interject itself into what it called a local zoning issue even though the mosque debate had taken on national significance with Republicans such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich forcefully opposing it. Obama publicly commented on the issue only after Bloomberg delivered an impassioned supportive speech and after the plan cleared a final city regulatory hurdle.

It's a tricky issue and not just because of the emotional nature of the attacks executed by terrorists from Muslim countries. Americans view Muslims far less favorably than other religious groups. Obama has set a welcoming tone even as the Christian president has been falsely accused by conservative critics of secretly being Muslim or foreign-born.

Obama waded into the debate Friday at the annual White House dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadhan, saying: "Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances."

By Saturday, the president was in Florida -- and elaborating.

"I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there," he said. "I was commenting very specifically on the right that people have that dates back to our founding."

Republicans, led by several considering challenging Obama in 2012, assailed the president. "We all know that they have the right to do it, but should they?" Palin asked on Twitter.

Most Democrats stayed silent, probably because they'd rather discuss voters' No.1 issue - jobs. They are already answering questions about a 9.5 percent unemployment rate.AP

    Najib Perlu Siasat MAS

Salahuddin: Najib perlu tubuh suruhanjaya siasat MAS rugi RM8 bilion

    Soi Lek Cabul Perlembagaan

Isu ekuiti Bumiputera: Soi Lek menentang Perlembagaan, kata Rais

— Bernama

Dr Mahathir and Najib by Sakmongkol

    Friday, 20 August 2010

    Dr.Mahathir and PM Najib

I managed to catch up with the Oracle of Syed Putra. He has been away for sometime accompanying his friend, a former senior leader of the government, abroad. As usual, we talked some politics.
Have you met Dr. Mahathir? he asked.
Not yet said I. His press officer hasn't called me.
I am not sure he will after so many uncomplimentary passages about the man who can walk on water, I wrote in my passages.
But I suppose you know of developments in the country?
Yes, I read the latest speech by Chua Soi Lek. That's going to be a problem. Can the PM handle it?
What's the difference between Dr Mahathir and Dato Najib? The former begun his career branded as an Ultra Malay. That initial image stuck throughout his life. He was an icon to the Malays. His was the voice of the inner Malay. Having cut his teeth deeply which left a permanent mark in the Malay psyche, Dr. Mahathir has that reservoir of 'goodwill' to identify with the inner feelings of Malays at large.
In later years, when Dr Mahathir was to relax this ultra image, people still believed in his core values. Dr Mahathir has the fundamentals. He has that hero image of looking out after Malay interests. He can draw down from his initial fixed deposit. The principal remains, he is reaping the dividends. Whatever he does in those years while in power, even if they seem contrary to his Malay-first persona, were excusable. People still think of him as having the fundamentals of Malayness.
Profound observations , I thought. My own thoughts are as follows.
What about our PM Najib? Dato Najib has none of that. He hasn't build a reservoir of core Malayness values large enough from which he can draw down. People are not sure whether he can really empathize with the plight of the Malay lumpen-proletariat. In the 1980's I thought he had the making of a Malay ultra when he made fiery speeches at the TPCA stadium in Kampung Bharu. Never mind if that was a show of brinkmanship- it could have left an indelible mark on the Malay psyche as did Dr Mahathir before him.
Alas, that was just a low octane spark that wasn't capable of lighting a prairie fire of Malay activism. He became quiet after so many UMNO people and others got sent to the University in Taiping. Those sent got a degree in Ops Lalang.
Everyone knows Dr Mahathir can be funny sometimes. In a matter-of-factly way. Once during a speech he was giving, Dr. Mahathir likened Anwar to one of the Hindu Gods. I don't know which one, but the one which a few heads enabling that god to see all around. So when Anwar speaks at one place, he will say one thing, at another place, he will use another head and speak what that particular audience may like. Many heads make a wise man? A tricky fellow?
Najib has somehow contracted this dangerous disposition. Here he speaks on of one thing. At another place he speaks of another language. He was uneasy at Perkasa's Bumiputera Economic Congress. He had to throw away a prepared speech and dug down deep into the fact he is Tun Razak's eldest son- the architect of NEP. This he proclaimed, is the reason he is not going to be person who besmirches the memory of the father. He quickly said, the affirmative polices, to wit, the 30% requirement shall remain. Perkasa members pee-ed in their pants with excitement.
At the Chinese Economic Congress he sang a different tune. He went back to his NEM mantra. He was at ease at the MCA Chinese Economic Congress. His speech at the Congress actually has entrapped him. His pronouncements on the role of the Chinese Business community is a clear signal that at this moment, he is more accommodative to the Chinese. Because he thinks, his priority now is to regain Chinese trust and win the next elections. He may but this is achieved perhaps at the cost of forfeiting a lot of Malay support. He should have asked about the speech Chua Soi Lek wants to make and do some editing. Soi Lek was crafty enough to corner the PM at the Congress. And I don't think it was a coincidence the MCA invited Nazir Razak given his thinking inclinations.
The problem with Najib, he is always ambivalent. He is a fence sitter. Not a risk taker. Never a politician with steely resolve.
If Dato Najib doesn't have the personal constitution of a Mahathir, what can he do? He must surround himself with the ablest, toughest and dedicated leadership material. The Oracle's friend, a former very senior member of the government, has been a long advocate asking the PM to build a new team. Loyal followers and team members can be rewarded in other ways. Najib operates with people he is comfortable with- no matter if they are ignoramuses.
If he thinks the MInang Rais is super loyal, he can reward Rais by appointing him to the cultural capital of the world. There, Rais can showcase his literary and cultural skills. His 'Doberman' Nazri Aziz can be rewarded by other means too.
Otherwise, a supreme leader with weak constitution, is cannon fodder for the more aggressive second tier leaders.
The one redeeming thing the PM has is the awareness that past policies are not etched in stone. They are not fixed. So they can be changed provided his alternatives are well thought through, articulated well enough and shared by his team members.
I can accept his reasoning that we don't need the 30 per cent requirement as in the old days. Meaning he doesn't need to merely fill up that 30% requirement with just any Bumi material. Better education has resulted in a bumper harvest of abler and tougher BUmiputera material which he can leverage to craft his new affirmative strategies.
He must go back to the basic values that underscore success. These basic values will help him achieve his NEM and an economy with high income. He needs first of all to set up an exceptionally strong government with the ablest, the toughest and dedicated leadership material. What are the basic values?
    Leadership material
of high integrity. A person moves up based on merits, an enabling environment that offers a level playing field for talent- undifferentiated in the form of race or gender, articulate leaders who can move others and communicate with people. These are some of the foundational elements that make a successful country.
But has to look past his small plot of vegetable patch. He has to headhunt within UMNO first and then others.

This is sheer exageration by disloyal subversive elements. Yen Yen is one of my favorite chics from the Melayu Chicken Assoc. The sad fact of the matter is that the judiciary is in such a tattered state, Mirza's fate depend on whether his case comes up before an upright judge or a compromised one!!
Yes, RPK has also informed those who read Mtoday , Mirza's uprightness is the cause of his troubles now -beginning with Azalina, now this Yen Yen.
That's the state of our country now, the righteous officers are framed while the corrupt ones laugh all the way to the bank!!

When the 1st charge came up about a year ago, I put in a few comment on MT supporting Mirza as I have always known him to be one of those rare BN nominee that is beyond corruption but was censored by the majority of other MT commentators, if not all of them. Where are all you detractors now? Why the change of opinion? Could it have something to do with RPK's report on this issue?

People, do remember that not all BN supporters are crooks (though the majority in power are) and neither are all Pakatan reps trustworthy.

Actually I am not surprise that Ng Yen Yen, Azalina, Tengku Mansor and many more ministers were involved in corruption. We all know how much a minister earn. It don't take a genius to establish whether they are corrupted or not. When investigating them, include their love one as well. Nobody suddenly become rich like that.

The problem with the present BN government is that they appear to condone such action. Look at those obvious case. Khir Toyol with his mansion. Mike tyson with his two million ringgit cash carried to Australia. None of them were charged and prosecuted. Looke at government procurement, no open tender certainly lead to corruption. Everyone beginning to think it is their God given right to take tax payers money. I do not think they even feel guilty about it.

In corruption, the hand that gives is as guilty as the hand that receives. The problem of corruption in Malaysia started with two kinds of people, the ones with the money and the ones with none and are lazy and tempted by money. The temptation started with gomen clerks and RM10 for file to go on top. Eventually the ones who were lazy and easily tempted were getting educated by the ones with money in the ways of easy cari makan. Thank you for the lesson, taukeh!. Slowly and surely, they begin to get smarter and realise they can manipulate the ones with the money by using the system and play their game. No more were the ones who were lazy goin to be satisfied with peanuts offered, they wanted more.. they wanted millions. So they flexed their political muscles and used and abused them. Now its politicians and RM10******* for contracts. Today, the ones with money are fed up and crying foul. Now they want equality and transparency. Not for the sake of justice and fairplay but cause they are tired of being robbed on a daily basis. End of story. This will definite bite for some but I don't give a F**k if you vote me down. This is reality check lesson No.1. More to come soon.

Looking in totality of the Ministry of Tourism, it was during the time of Tgk Adnen Tgk Mansor that the corruption stated or even long before. ThE talk of the town was he had this WP MP that thought him how to create the opportunity to make money. One god example the development of the Labuan International Sea Sport cost the tax-payer RM35Mil. It's more than 10 years and Labuan still does not attract any tourist. Other than those from the family of the Australian who fell during the 2nd World War. There were so many white Gajah around the country that were built by Tourism ministry that does not bring income and business to the locals. What about the project Pulau Layang-Layang, Pearl of the Orient so on and so forth.
When PR take ovee these should also be taken into account for investigation.
